What is A Thread Repair?
A thread repair is a process used to restore damaged or worn-out threads on a bolt, nut, or hole. Over time or due to improper use, threads can become stripped, worn, or damaged, making it difficult or impossible to fasten parts securely.
1. Drill the Hole to the Correct Size Drill to the correct diameter: Use a drill bit that is specified in the repair kit instructions (typically provided with the thread insert kit) to enlarge the hole. This step is necessary to accommodate the insert. Drill to the proper depth: Make sure you drill deep enough for the insert to fit properly, but not too deep that it weakens the surrounding material.
2. Tap the Hole to Match the Insert Use the provided tap: After drilling the hole, you need to use the tap provided in the kit to re-cut or create the threads in the hole that will accept the insert. Lubricate: Apply a lubricant (such as cutting oil) to the tap and the hole to make the tapping process easier and smoother. Tap in a straight line: Ensure that the tap is aligned perpendicular to the surface to avoid cross-threading. Turn the tap slowly and steadily to cut the threads, backing it out occasionally to clear chips.
3. Insert the Thread Repair (Insert or Coil) Prepare the insert: If you're using a Heli-Coil or similar insert, use the tool that comes with the kit to install the insert. For a Time-Sert, you may use a driver tool designed to install the insert.
4. Break Off the Tang (if applicable) Heli-Coil inserts: Some Heli-Coil inserts come with a tang (a small tab) at the end to help with installation. Once the insert is fully seated, use a small tool (usually provided with the kit) to break off the tang.
5. Clean and Inspect Remove debris: After installing the insert, clean the area again to remove any debris or metal shavings. Inspect the insert: Ensure that the insert is correctly seated and aligned. If you used a coiled insert (Heli-Coil), check that the coil is not protruding or misaligned.
